Xbox Mythic Achievements Explained: What Counts, DLC Rules and Retroactive Unlocks

Xbox Mythic Achievements reward completion of a game's original achievement set. Here is how DLC, retroactive unlocks, progress tracking and Insider access work.

Xbox Mythic Achievements add a completion badge for players who finish every achievement that shipped with a game. The important rule is that later DLC and update achievements do not block the Mythic, and adding new achievements later does not take an earned Mythic away.

Microsoft is starting the feature with Xbox Insiders, so it is not yet a general Xbox rollout. The official announcement also says eligible games you completed in the past can receive Mythic status retroactively.

What counts toward an Xbox Mythic Achievement?

Microsoft’s rule is based on a game’s original achievement set. To earn Mythic status, you need to complete all achievements that were part of that original set.

Achievements added later through downloadable content or game updates are not required for the Mythic.

That creates a clearer completion target than a system where a later expansion could suddenly make a previously completed game incomplete again.

Do DLC achievements count?

No. Xbox says achievements introduced after the original achievement set through DLC or later updates do not count toward the Mythic requirement.

You can still earn those add-on achievements normally. They simply sit outside the completion condition used for Mythic status.

Xbox also says the interface will clearly tag add-on achievements so players can distinguish them from the original set.

Can you lose a Mythic after earning it?

Xbox says no. Once a game has earned Mythic status, that status remains even if more achievements are added later.

For completionists, this is an important design choice. It means the Mythic represents completion of the game’s defined original achievement set rather than a moving total that can change every time new content arrives.

Will old completed games unlock Mythic retroactively?

Yes, where the game is eligible.

Microsoft says Mythic status is applied retroactively to games whose original achievement sets you already completed. That includes eligible Xbox 360 games, so the feature is not limited to current-generation releases.

You should not need to replay an eligible completed game just to trigger the Mythic condition if Xbox already has the achievement history required to recognize the completion.

How does Mythic progress appear on Xbox?

The Insider preview adds a new Gaming tab to the Xbox profile. Microsoft says this view can show Mythic status, completion progress, and achievement information across your games.

The update also makes the distinction between original and add-on achievements easier to see. A progress bar focuses on the original set used for Mythic completion, while later DLC or update achievements are identified separately.

Microsoft says players can also view friends’ Mythic status.

Which games support Mythic Achievements?

Xbox has not published a simple promise that every game in the catalog will receive Mythic status.

The official announcement describes retroactive support for eligible completed games and specifically notes that Xbox 360 titles can participate. The safest interpretation is therefore to rely on what your Xbox profile reports for each game rather than assuming every historical title will qualify identically.

Who can use Mythic Achievements right now?

As of October 1, 2026, Mythic Achievements are an Xbox Insider preview.

Microsoft’s September 29 announcement says Xbox Insiders can get an early look at the feature. The official announcement does not provide a date for a broader public release, so a general rollout should not be treated as scheduled until Xbox publishes one.

Players interested in Insider features can use the Xbox Insider Hub on supported Xbox consoles and Windows PC, subject to Microsoft’s normal Insider availability and enrollment rules.

What Mythic Achievements do not require

  • You do not need achievements added later through DLC to earn the Mythic.
  • You do not need achievements introduced by later updates to earn the Mythic.
  • You do not lose an earned Mythic because a developer adds more achievements later.
  • You do not need to recomplete an eligible historical game if Xbox can retroactively recognize that its original achievement set was already finished.

Why the original-achievement rule matters

The useful part of Mythic Achievements is not just the new badge. It is the fixed completion rule underneath it.

A game can receive years of expansions, seasonal content, and title updates. If every later achievement permanently changed the completion target, a player could lose practical “100 percent” status without doing anything wrong.

Xbox avoids that problem by anchoring Mythic completion to the original achievement list and separating later additions.

That also makes the badge easier to compare across a player’s library: it means the original game was completed according to the achievement set it launched with.
