Gears of War: E-Day Early Access: Start Time, Game Pass Rules and the $30 Upgrade

Gears of War: E-Day early access starts October 1 at 15:00 UTC. Here is how Premium Edition, the $30 Upgrade, Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass differ.

Gears of War: E-Day early access begins October 1, 2026 at 15:00 UTC for Premium Edition players. The worldwide standard launch follows on October 6 at the same time.

The confusing part is not the date. It is how the Premium Edition, the $30 Premium Edition Upgrade, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and normal base-game ownership fit together.

If you only need the PC hardware side, Instant Game Zone already has a separate Gears of War: E-Day PC requirements guide. This article focuses only on access, timing, and edition rules. For confirmed launch problems and fixes, see our E-Day PC known-issues guide.

Gears of War: E-Day early access start time

Xbox says early access begins on October 1 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific / 15:00 UTC.

The worldwide launch begins on October 6 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific / 15:00 UTC.

Microsoft describes the Premium benefit as up to five days of early access.

Pre-install began September 29 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Steam, so eligible players can install before the access window opens.

Who gets early access?

The early-access benefit is attached to the Premium Edition.

There are two basic ways to get that Premium access:

  • buy the full Premium Edition
  • have qualifying access to the base game and buy the Premium Edition Upgrade

Xbox’s U.S. product page lists the Premium Edition Upgrade at $30 USD. Regional pricing can differ.

How the $30 Premium Edition Upgrade works

The Upgrade is not a standalone copy of Gears of War: E-Day. Xbox marks it as requiring the game.

Microsoft’s official store text says the Upgrade requires either:

  • the base game
  • or an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership

The Upgrade adds the Premium Edition benefits to that qualifying access. Those benefits include up to five days of early access, the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, five seasonal customization packs starting with the Emergence Pack, and 1,000 Iron.

If you already own the Standard Edition, the $30 Upgrade is therefore the direct path to the Premium extras without rebuying the full Premium Edition.

Does Game Pass include Gears of War: E-Day?

Yes, but the membership tier matters depending on what you are trying to do.

Xbox’s official game FAQ says Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members can play Gears of War: E-Day beginning with the standard October 6 launch.

That is separate from the early-access rule.

Can Game Pass members buy the $30 upgrade for early access?

Xbox’s Premium Edition Upgrade store page specifically says the Upgrade requires the base game or an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership.

That wording matters.

The general game FAQ confirms PC Game Pass gets the base game on October 6, but the Premium Upgrade store text does not separately name PC Game Pass as a qualifying membership for the Upgrade.

Because of that difference, Instant Game Zone is not treating PC Game Pass alone as confirmed eligibility for the $30 Upgrade unless Microsoft updates the store wording or publishes a separate clarification.

If you have Game Pass Ultimate, the official Upgrade page explicitly names your membership as a qualifying path.

What if you only want to play on October 6?

You do not need the Premium Edition just to play Gears of War: E-Day at normal launch.

For the October 6 release:

  • Standard Edition owners can play
  • Premium Edition owners can play
  • Game Pass Ultimate members can play
  • PC Game Pass members can play

The Premium purchase is about the earlier October 1 access and its additional digital content, not about making the base game playable at standard launch.

Standard Edition vs Premium Edition vs Upgrade

Option Base game included? Early access? Who it is for
Standard Edition Yes No Premium early access Players who want the game at normal launch
Premium Edition Yes Up to 5 days early Players buying the full Premium package
Premium Edition Upgrade No Up to 5 days early with qualifying base access Base-game owners or qualifying Game Pass Ultimate members who want Premium benefits

Xbox’s U.S. pages list Standard at $69.99, Premium at $99.99, and the Upgrade at $30. Regional pricing can differ.

Does Steam get the same early-access date?

Xbox Wire says pre-install is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Steam, and identifies October 1 at 15:00 UTC as the Premium Edition early-access start.

Players should still confirm their purchased Steam edition before assuming they have Premium access. Owning the Standard Edition does not by itself add the early-access entitlement.

Best option by situation

You own Standard Edition and want to play October 1: the Premium Edition Upgrade is the relevant add-on.

You have Game Pass Ultimate and want the Premium benefits: Microsoft’s Upgrade page explicitly says Game Pass Ultimate qualifies as the base access requirement.

You have PC Game Pass: the game itself is confirmed for October 6, but the current Premium Upgrade store wording does not explicitly confirm PC Game Pass as a qualifying membership for the Upgrade. Check the live store before buying around the early-access window.

You are happy to wait until October 6: you can use your normal Standard Edition access or the supported Game Pass tiers without paying for Premium solely for early access.
