Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, but existing owners do not need to buy the entire game again. Nintendo offers a $9.99 Upgrade Pack that adds higher-resolution output, 60 fps and new gameplay content.

The important detail is timing and ownership. The digital Switch 2 Edition and Upgrade Pack launched on July 30, 2026. Nintendo later released a physical Switch 2 Edition on October 1. If you already own the original Nintendo Switch version, the Upgrade Pack is the relevant purchase.

How much does the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 upgrade cost?

Nintendo lists the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack at $9.99 in the United States.

The complete Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is listed at $69.99 for players who do not already own the original game.

The Upgrade Pack requires the full Nintendo Switch version of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It does not work as a standalone game.

When did the Switch 2 upgrade launch?

The digital Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Upgrade Pack released on July 30, 2026.

Nintendo’s later October 1 date applies to the physical Switch 2 Edition, not to the first availability of the digital upgrade.

That distinction matters because the upgrade is not a brand-new October feature. It has been available digitally since July.

What does the Switch 2 upgrade improve?

Nintendo lists three major presentation upgrades:

  • up to 4K resolution in TV mode
  • 1080p resolution in handheld mode
  • 60 frames per second

A compatible display is required for 4K output, and Nintendo notes that frame rate is capped at 60 fps when outputting at 4K.

These are supported output specifications from Nintendo. IGZ has not independently measured native rendering resolution, frame pacing, image quality or loading times.

The upgrade adds new content too

The $9.99 Upgrade Pack is not only a technical enhancement.

Nintendo also adds a new Rare Blade named MOMO, a new Merc Assault action-battle mode and new outfit designs for Pyra and Mythra.

That gives returning players reasons to revisit the game beyond simply replaying the original content at a higher frame rate.

What is MOMO?

MOMO is a new Rare Blade added to the Switch 2 Edition.

Nintendo says MOMO has two forms. Switching between them changes her appearance and elemental affinity, and she also comes with a new quest.

That makes MOMO a genuine gameplay addition rather than a cosmetic bonus attached to the technical upgrade.

What is Merc Assault?

Merc Assault is a new action-battle mode built around the game’s Blade system.

You can choose up to six Blades for Merc Missions and directly control them during the activity. Nintendo says players can move, fight and swap freely between the Blades under their command, with Blade Specials forming an important part of the mode.

This is one of the biggest reasons the Switch 2 Edition is more than a resolution and frame-rate patch.

What changes for Pyra and Mythra?

The Switch 2 Edition adds new outfit designs for Pyra and Mythra.

Nintendo says the outfits appear both while adventuring and during cutscenes.

They are part of the Switch 2 Edition feature set rather than content added to the original Switch release independently.

Do existing owners need to buy the full game again?

No.

If you already own Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo specifically directs you to the Upgrade Pack rather than the full $69.99 Switch 2 Edition.

The purchasing split is straightforward:

  • Existing owner: buy the $9.99 Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack
  • New player: buy the complete $69.99 Switch 2 Edition

Before buying, you can also check the broader ownership and upgrade rules in the Instant Game Zone Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade & Compatibility Checker.

What happens with Torna: The Golden Country?

Torna has a separate ownership rule that is easy to misunderstand.

Nintendo says digital and physical standalone versions of Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country received a free update on July 30 enabling 4K/60 fps in TV mode and 1080p/60 fps in handheld mode on Nintendo Switch 2.

Players who access Torna through the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion Pass follow a different route. Nintendo says those players can access Torna’s Switch 2 improvements by purchasing the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack.

So the correct path depends on how you own Torna:

  • standalone digital or physical Torna copy: free technical update
  • Torna through the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion Pass: main-game Switch 2 Upgrade Pack required

Is the $9.99 upgrade worth it?

For an existing owner who plans to replay Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on Switch 2, the upgrade offers more than presentation improvements.

The move to 60 fps and higher supported output resolutions changes how the game is presented, while MOMO, Merc Assault and the new Pyra/Mythra outfits add content that was not part of the original Switch release.

The value is weaker if you already finished the game and have no interest in returning for either the new content or another playthrough.

IGZ has not independently tested the Switch 2 Edition, so this assessment is based on Nintendo’s listed feature set rather than measured performance or image-quality testing.

Bottom line

Existing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 owners do not need to repurchase the full $69.99 Switch 2 Edition.

Nintendo’s $9.99 Upgrade Pack adds up to 4K output in TV mode, 1080p handheld output and 60 fps, plus MOMO, Merc Assault and new outfits for Pyra and Mythra.

The biggest ownership wrinkle is Torna. Standalone Torna copies received a free technical update, while Expansion Pass access depends on the main Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 Upgrade Pack.

If you already own the base game and intend to return to Alrest, checking your Torna ownership method is the final step before deciding what to buy.
