Final Fantasy XIV’s Beastmaster arrived in Patch 7.56 as a limited melee DPS job with its own familiar-capture system and exclusive solo duty, the Crucible of the Unbroken. The important part for a new Beastmaster is that normal job progression rules do not apply in quite the same way.

Beastmaster starts at level 1, currently caps at level 50, and is built around forging pacts with beasts, assembling familiar teams, and using those familiars inside and outside the Crucible.

How to unlock Beastmaster in FFXIV

Square Enix lists Beastmaster as a limited job available through the level-50 quest Strangers in the Wood in New Gridania.

You need a level-50 Disciple of War or Magic and the relevant A Realm Reborn main-scenario progression completed before the quest becomes available.

Once unlocked, Beastmaster begins at level 1 rather than inheriting your level from another job.

Beastmaster is a limited job, not a normal melee DPS

Although Beastmaster is classified as melee DPS and shares gear with monk and samurai, Square Enix treats it as a limited job.

That means it follows special participation rules. Beastmaster does not use normal role actions and cannot enter several categories of content through the standard matchmaking structure used by unrestricted jobs.

Square Enix’s job guide excludes Beastmaster from activities including Duty Roulettes, PvP, Ultimate Raids, Deep Dungeons, and Variant/Criterion Dungeons. If you are planning to level Beastmaster like a normal melee job through roulettes, that is the first expectation to reset.

How Beastmaster leveling works

Beastmaster receives enhanced experience from FATEs, but its open-world progression does not simply copy Blue Mage’s leveling model.

The job’s central progression loop is built around familiar collection, Beastmaster quests, open-world activity, and the Crucible rather than ordinary roulette progression.

The current maximum level is 50.

How to capture beasts and forge pacts

The capture system revolves around identifying eligible creatures, weakening them, and attempting to forge a pact.

The Gauge action lets you assess whether a pact can be made with a target. When a beast is eligible, Capture applies the condition needed to attempt the pact when the target is defeated.

Weakening the beast improves the chance of a successful capture, but success is not guaranteed. Failed attempts are part of the system rather than proof that the target cannot be captured.

Square Enix also provides an alternative through Kornago gourds, which can be used to forge pacts without defeating the beast in the usual way.

The Master’s Bestiary is your familiar collection

Familiars you have successfully forged pacts with are tracked in the Master’s Bestiary.

That collection is more than a checklist. It is the pool from which you select familiars for Beastmaster play and for your Crucible team.

Different familiars bring different actions and tactical roles, so collecting more beasts expands your available team-building options rather than only increasing a completion percentage.

How to unlock the Crucible of the Unbroken

The Crucible of the Unbroken is Beastmaster’s exclusive duty.

Square Enix lists Beastmaster level 30 as a requirement for its introductory quest, Into the Crucible, in the Central Shroud. You also need to complete the preceding Beastmaster quest required by that chain.

Once unlocked, the Crucible presents boards made up of spaces containing different encounters and events. A board is cleared by progressing inward and defeating its final boss.

Crucible item-level requirements were added after launch

This is an important post-launch change that older guides can miss.

On September 17, Square Enix added minimum average item-level requirements to stop players from accidentally entering the Crucible with gear below the intended level.

Board Minimum average item level
First Board of the Unbroken 25+
Second Board of the Unbroken 35+
Third Board of the Unbroken 82+
First Master’s Board 82+
Second Master’s Board 82+

If the duty refuses entry even though your Beastmaster level is sufficient, check your equipped average item level before assuming the unlock is broken.

How Crucible teams work

Before entering a board, you choose a team of familiars from the Master’s Bestiary. The maximum team allowance varies by board.

Square Enix also provides a Recommended Team option if you do not want to build the lineup manually.

Inside the Crucible, familiar management matters because the duty uses its own battle rules rather than behaving like a normal dungeon.

HP does not regenerate normally inside the Crucible

One of the biggest differences is resource pressure. Player and familiar HP do not simply regenerate between every encounter in the way a new player might expect.

Items, familiar management, and board decisions therefore matter across the run rather than only inside an individual fight.

Beastmaster also has tools such as Snarl and Challenge for controlling enemy attention between the player and familiar team.

Beast rank and familiar progression

Familiars can gain experience through Crucible play and increase their beast rank. Square Enix currently lists beast rank progression up to 25.

Feed and other Crucible systems can affect familiar performance, which makes the duty part combat challenge and part team-development system.

Square Enix has already issued post-launch hotfixes for the Crucible, including fixes related to familiar behavior and duty mechanics. The item-level gate above is the most important eligibility change for a starter guide.

Can you stop a Crucible run and continue later?

Yes. The Crucible supports suspension and later resumption of a run.

You can also forfeit. Square Enix provides partial rewards based on progress rather than treating every unfinished run as if nothing happened.

What are the three Crucible Degrees?

The Crucible can be played at different Degrees that increase the challenge and affect the competitive scoring structure.

The third degree is the relevant setting for ranking participation when rankings are available. Square Enix’s Patch 7.56 notes say ranking scores are compiled from the last three attempts of each board.

Are Crucible Rankings live?

Not yet as of October 17, 2026. Square Enix has announced that Crucible of the Unbroken Ranking Season 1 will start on Sunday, October 25, 2026 at 10:00 p.m. PDT (Monday, October 26 at 05:00 UTC). The season is scheduled to run through late November 2026; the exact end time is not yet announced, and the dates may change.

Season 1 was previously postponed following balance feedback and gameplay issues, but Square Enix has since announced the new start date. As of this October 17 check, rankings have not begun.

To record eligible scores once Season 1 opens, set Crucible Mode to Third Degree and select Participate in rankings before entering. Scores are compiled from your last three attempts at each board.

What should a new Beastmaster do first?

  1. Unlock Beastmaster through Strangers in the Wood.
  2. Level the job while learning its limited-job restrictions.
  3. Use Gauge to identify eligible beasts and begin building the Master’s Bestiary.
  4. Practice Capture on weakened targets and expect occasional failures.
  5. Reach Beastmaster level 30 and complete the quest chain needed for Into the Crucible.
  6. Check your average item level before entering each Crucible board.
  7. Build a familiar team around the board rather than using the same lineup automatically.
  8. Before attempting ranked Crucible runs, note the October 25, 2026 at 10:00 p.m. PDT start and select Third Degree with Participate in rankings enabled once the season opens.

Bottom line

Beastmaster is deliberately separate from normal FFXIV job progression. Its real loop is collecting familiars, learning how capture works, improving those familiars, and taking increasingly capable teams into the Crucible of the Unbroken.

The two details most likely to trip up a new player are the limited-job restrictions and the post-launch item-level requirements for the Crucible. Keep those in mind before assuming a missing roulette or blocked board is a bug.
