Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux have received their October 2026 updates. The PC versions on Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG arrived on October 22; Xbox Series, PS5, PS5 Pro and Windows Store updates followed on October 29. PLAION says the upgrade is free for most existing owners, but some game versions may not be compatible. Its FAQ says Japan availability is still being finalized.

When did the Metro Redux Next-Gen Update release?

The PC updates for Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG arrived on October 22, 2026. The Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Windows Store updates arrived on October 29.

PLAION’s FAQ says Japan availability is still being finalized; it does not give a confirmed November date.

The update is free for most owners of Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux. PLAION warns that some versions may not be compatible, so check your platform’s listing and the exact game version you own. New buyers receive the update with either Redux game.

PLAION’s FAQ does not detail the physical-disc redemption route. Disc owners should confirm eligibility with their platform before assuming the upgrade will be added automatically.

Is this another Metro Redux remaster?

No. 4A Games says the update is not a full remaster or remake. It updates the existing Redux games for current hardware while preserving their established experience.

The October updates add higher-resolution assets, improved visual effects and animation, platform features, bug fixes and quality-of-life changes. PLAION’s FAQ confirms that the update does not add ray tracing and is not a port to the current 4A Engine.

PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series upgrades compared

The updates add native current-generation support, but the available performance figures are platform-specific. Xbox Wire’s launch report from 4A Games lists Xbox Series modes for 4K at 60 fps or upscaled 4K at up to 120 fps. Those Xbox figures should not be read as PS5 or PC targets.

The console update also adds higher-quality lighting, shadows and particle effects, plus hardware tessellation and runtime displacement.

Platform Confirmed additions
PS5 Native PS5 support, DualSense Adaptive Triggers and Power Saver Mode support
PS5 Pro PS5 feature set plus PSSR support
Xbox Series X Native update; Xbox Wire lists 4K/60 and upscaled 4K up to 120 fps modes, plus Xbox platform features
Xbox Series S Native update; the announcements do not give an Xbox Series S-specific resolution and frame-rate breakdown

The important distinction is native current-generation support. The older Redux releases could already run on newer consoles through backward compatibility. The October updates provide separate PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series versions.

What does the PC update add?

The Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG updates arrived on October 22. The Windows Store version arrived on October 29.

4A Games lists 4K resolution with uncapped frame rates on PC, plus DLSS support, spatial audio, 4K textures, improved animation and environmental detail, bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.

4A Games’ published update details do not identify the DLSS version or presets. The 4K and uncapped-frame-rate description is a capability, not a guaranteed result on every PC configuration.

What does Xbox Play Anywhere mean for Metro Redux?

The updated Xbox versions support Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox handhelds.

Microsoft says Xbox Play Anywhere titles can be played across Xbox consoles, Windows 10/11 PCs and supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds at no additional cost for the same supported digital game. Progress follows the Xbox account, including saves, add-ons and achievements.

Xbox Play Anywhere applies to digital games only, not physical discs.

For digital Xbox owners, that makes the Redux update more than a visual upgrade. It also adds a cross-device ownership and progression path across supported Xbox and Windows hardware.

That does not answer the separate question of how older physical Metro Redux copies will be handled. Deep Silver has not published that process yet.

What is still unconfirmed?

PLAION’s FAQ confirms that some game versions may not qualify for the free update and says Japan availability is still being finalized. The public FAQ and platform announcements do not specify:

  • which individual game versions are incompatible on each storefront
  • the exact physical-disc upgrade process
  • save or achievement migration from older console versions
  • a Series S-specific resolution and frame-rate breakdown

Check your library or storefront for the update attached to your exact version. Do not assume that every purchase, region or physical disc uses the same entitlement route.

Why is Metro Redux getting this update now?

4A Games announced the update as the Metro franchise passed 50 million copies sold worldwide.

It also comes ahead of Metro 2039, which Deep Silver has announced for February 4, 2027. Updating the two Redux games gives existing owners a better-supported way to revisit the earlier Metro stories on current hardware before the series moves forward.

That context explains the timing, but it does not change the practical advice for existing owners: the October update is free, and there is little reason to buy a second copy solely to access the announced current-hardware improvements.

Should you replay Metro Redux now?

The updates are available on Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Windows Store, PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series, except that PLAION has not confirmed Japan availability yet.

If you already own either Redux game, check your platform library for the free update. PLAION says most owners qualify, but some game versions may be incompatible. Verify the edition listed in your library before buying a second copy.

4A Games and PLAION describe visual, control and platform updates. The published sources reviewed do not provide a complete platform-by-platform benchmark or confirm save transfer between older console apps and the new native versions.

Bottom line

Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux received their free updates in October 2026. PC Steam, Epic and GOG versions arrived October 22; Xbox Series, PS5, PS5 Pro and Windows Store versions arrived October 29. Japan availability remains unconfirmed in PLAION’s FAQ.

The Xbox Series report lists 4K/60 or upscaled 4K up to 120 fps modes. Do not apply those Xbox figures to other platforms. PLAION says most existing owners qualify for the free update, while some game versions may not be compatible.

Check the exact version in your game library before downloading or buying again. PLAION’s sources do not fully explain physical-disc eligibility or save migration for the new console apps.
